Blogtober 2018- Day #31- Fun Facts about Halloween

Hi Lovelies and welcome to the last day of Blogtober 2018!!! I finally to the last day of Blogtober!!! I have been participating in this for the last three years and never made it past the halfway point. This time I made it all the way through only missing a total of 6 days. Anyways, enough go that.......

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!! I thought since today is Halloween I would share some fun facts about Halloween with you. So, sit back, relax, grab your favorite Halloween candy, and enjoy some fun little factoids about Halloween.

Fun Facts about Halloween

Halloween Fun Fact #1: Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner initially didn't know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out years later, he said he was honored.

Halloween Fun Fact #2: The first Jack-O-Lanterns were actually made from turnips.

Halloween Fun Fact #3: The word "witch" comes from the Old English wicce, meaning "wise woman." In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night.

Halloween Fun Fact #4: Samhainophobia is the fear of Halloween.

Halloween Fun Fact #5: 9.The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with a 836 lb. pumpkin.

Halloween Fun Fact #6: Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.

Halloween Fun Fact #7: "Halloween" is short for "Hallows' Eve" or "Hallows' Evening," which was the evening before All Hallows' (sanctified or holy) Day or Hallowmas on November 1. In an effort to convert pagans, the Christian church decided that Hallowmas or All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2) should assimilate sacred pagan holidays that fell on or around October 31.

Halloween Fun Fact #8: Ireland is typically believed to be the birthplace of Halloween.

Halloween Fun Fact #9: With their link to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (a precursor to Halloween) and later to witches, cats have a permanent place in Halloween folklore. During the ancient celebration of Samhain, Druids were said to throw cats into a fire, often in wicker cages, as part of divination proceedings.

Halloween Fun Fact #10: Scarecrows, a popular Halloween fixture, symbolize the ancient agricultural roots of the holiday.

Have a safe and fun Halloween!!

Blogtober 2018- Day #24- 20 Small Ways to Be Happier

When life gets hard, it’s easy to dwell on the negative and feel sorry for yourself. While it takes a lot more effort to be positive and grateful for what we have, it is so much more worth it, trust me. It’s all about putting things into perspective and choosing happiness. Let’s be real, you can’t be happy all the time and it’s OK to have bad days and let it all out – we all have those days once in a while – but there are plenty of small ways to be happier.

20 Small Ways To Be Happier

1. Go to sleep when you’re tired.

After a good night of sleep, you’ll wake up feeling refreshed and ready-ish to face a new day. Plus, you will appreciate going to bed earlier when your alarm goes off in the morning.

2. Make someone happy.

Spreading happiness will not only cheer someone up but it will also make you feel better, too. Make your mom a cup of tea, call your best friend, or compliment someone on their outfit. Good energy is contagious.

3. Celebrate your small victories.

What if instead of wasting so much time putting ourselves down for not being good enough at something, we celebrated our small victories? It can be something like getting complimented at school or work, learning a new recipe, or making that phone call you were dreading. Be your own cheerleader!

4. Practice gratitude.

Think about something you’re grateful every day before going to bed and write it down. When you take the time to count your blessings, you realize that your life is actually full of things to be grateful for. Your mind is simply too clouded and too busy to see it.

5. Put down your electronics for an hour every day.

The Internet is pretty amazing, we all know that. But it’s also addicting and that is why it’s important to switch off. Read a book, go for a walk outside, and spend more time with your loved ones.

6. Stop snoozing your alarm.

It will only make you feel more tired.

7. Start journaling.

Writing is a therapy, it helps you put things into perspective. But don’t try to be a creative writer – that’s not the point, just let your thoughts out on the paper. Let it be messy and honest, straight from the heart. I tend to do it when I’m feeling anxious or sad and it always makes me feel a better.

8. Learn something new.

Whether it is a new language, how to play the ukulele, or coding a website, learning something new will make you feel accomplished.

9. Spend more time with yourself.

It can be a bit scary at first but it’s important to learn to enjoy your own company. Curl up on the couch with a good book or go shopping by yourself. You can also try meditation for 10 minutes every morning, it’s a good way to start your day and listen to your own thoughts and needs.

10. Cry if you need to.

It’s okay to allow yourself to be sad sometimes, it doesn’t mean your weak. Having a cry and letting it all out will make you feel better but don’t dwell on the negative things for too long.

11. Spend more time outside.

It’s scientifically proven that vitamin D boosts your mood and the fresh air will give you an energy boost. It also helps to clear your head when you’re feeling anxious.

12. Sweat it out.

I feel like a hypocrite trying to encourage you to exercise but I can’t deny it makes you feel good. And you don’t need to run a marathon, start by taking a walk every day or the stairs instead of the elevator. Baby steps.

13. Spend more time with your loved ones.

Make more time to hang out with your closest family and friends, the people who are there for you no matter what and avoid people that put you down.

14. Make plans.

Having something to look forward to will not only make you happier but also help you overcome challenges.

15. Buy a planner and organize your life.

If you love stationery and planning as much as I do, organizing your life with the help of a pretty planner will make you feel accomplished and prepared to tackle your to-do list.

16. Stretch out your body in the morning.

Stretching improves your posture and gives you the energy to face a new day. All you need to do is put your hands above your head and stretch as far as you can for a few seconds. Super easy!

17. Step out of your comfort zone.

I’m the first to admit this isn’t easy but it’s so empowering to take a step out of your bubble and overcome a fear. Don’t let fear hold you back.

18. Learn to let go.

You are wasting your energy by worrying about things that happened in the past. Been there, done that. You can’t go back and change them so focus on the present, instead.

19. Smile to your reflection in the mirror.

Yes, do it. I do this every time I’m feeling a bit blah, is that weird? I promise it actually works. Of course, it really depends on the situation but smiling, even when it’s fake, activates a little something in your brain that makes you feel happier.

20. Remember: you’re the one in charge of your happiness.

You can’t control what happens to you, you can only control how you react to it. You can’t also rely on other people to bring you happiness, it must come from within, so focus on creating a positive mindset!

What are your favorite small ways to be happier?

Blogotber 2018- Day #19- Fall Book List

Welcome to Blogtober Day #19!

Today's post is all about books! Here is my list of book suggestions for this Fall season.

Enjoy!

1. Sing, Unburied, Sing

In Jesmyn Ward's first novel since her National Book Award winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural twenty-first-century America. Drawing on Morrison and Faulkner, The Odyssey and the Old Testament, Ward gives us an epochal story, a journey through Mississippi's past and present that is both an intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle. Ward is a major American writer, multiply awarded and universally lauded, and in Sing, Unburied, Sing she is at the height of her powers.

Jojo and his toddler sister, Kayla, live with their grandparents, Mam and Pop, and the occasional presence of their drug-addicted mother, Leonie, on a farm on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Leonie is simultaneously tormented and comforted by visions of her dead brother, which only come to her when she's high; Mam is dying of cancer; and quiet, steady Pop tries to run the household and teach Jojo how to be a man. When the white father of Leonie's children is released from prison, she packs her kids and a friend into her car and sets out across the state for Parchman farm, the Mississippi State Penitentiary, on a journey rife with danger and promise.

Sing, Unburied, Sing grapples with the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power, and limitations, of the bonds of family. Rich with Ward's distinctive, musical language, Sing, Unburied, Sing is a majestic new work and an essential

2.  Little Fires Everywhere

In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned -- from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.

Enter Mia Warren -- an enigmatic artist and single mother -- who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.

When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town--and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs.

3. On the Street Where You Live

Following a nasty divorce and the trauma of being stalked, criminal defense attorney Emily Graham leaves Albany to work in Manhattan. Craving roots, she buys her ancestral home, a Victorian house in the seaside resort town of Spring Lake, New Jersey. Her family sold the house in 1892, after one of Emily's forebears, Madeline Shapley, then a young girl, disappeared.

As the house is renovated and a pool dug, a skeleton is found and identified as Martha Lawrence, a young Spring Lake woman who vanished several years ago. Within her hand is the finger bone of another woman, with a ring -- a Shapley family heirloom -- still on it. Determined to find the connection between the two murders, Emily becomes a threat to a seductive killer...who chooses her as the next victim.

4. All Around the Town

When Laurie Kenyon, a twenty-one-year-old student, is accused of murdering her English professor, she has no memory of the crime. Her fingerprints, however, are everywhere. When she asks her sister, attorney Sarah, to mount her defense, Sarah in turn brings in psychiatrist Justin Donnelly. Kidnapped at the age of four and victimized for two years, Laurie has developed astounding coping skills. Only when the unbearable memories of those lost years are released can the truth of the crime come out—and only then can the final sadistic plan of her abductor, whose obsession is stronger than ever, be revealed.

What's on your reading for the Fall?

Blogtober 2018- Day #14- My Favorite Horror Movies Part 1

Hi Lovelies! Welcome to Blogtober 2018- Day #14! Today's post is all about some of my favorite horror movies ( there will be a part 2 that will be posted closer to Halloween).

With Halloween coming up I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite horror movies. Now, I have always been a fan of horror movies and I understand that some of you might not be, but that's okay. If you are not a fan of horror movies then you might just want to skip this post altogether. For those who love horror movies get your popcorn and your big fuzzy blankets ready!!!

1. The Scream series (1996). I love this series!! It's nineties nostalgia in a slasher film. What's not to love?

2. Friday the 13th 1, 2 , and 3. That's it...just those three!! I love all three of these. The third movie I still have a hard time watching because it freaks me out that much.

3. Halloween. Jamie Lee Curtis is the best! Need I say more?

4. Rosemary's baby (1968). Just the right amount of freaky to scare the crap out of me.

5. The Exorcist (1973). Probably the most disturbing movie on this list and probably the most offensive movie I have ever seen.

6. The Shining (1980). One of the most visually beautiful horror films in my opinion. Jack Nicholson is super creepy in this one!!

7. It. This needs to be on this list. That damn clown gave nightmares for months!! It was worth it though because I loved the story and the movie!

8. Identity. This is another favorite of mine and John Cusack was awesome in it!  I loved that multiple personality disorder was the focus of the story.

9. A Nightmare of Elm Street. This is another favorite of mine. After seeing the movie I would not take baths for months, which brings me to the last movie on the list.

10. Psycho. I would not take showers after seeing this movie, yet it us one of my favorites!

What are your favorite horror movies?

Blogtober 2018- Day #13- My Fall Morning Cleaning Routine

Hi Lovelies and welcome to Blogtober Day #13!!! Today's post is all about my Fall Morning Cleaning Routine. Let's get to it, shall we?

My oldest has been back in school for about 2 months now and I think I finally have my morning cleaning routine established. Now, I do have my 3 year old with me and my husband does work part time so he's home most of the time too.

My intent on posting this is to encourage you as you manage your own home and to give you  a few ideas that might be helpful. Your routine will probably look much different than mine, and mine will probably look much different as my kids grow and can do more things on their own.

This routine is my "ideal routine", so it rarely looks as perfect and streamlined as this, but it's my daily goal.

The night before:

Yes, my morning routine starts at night. The last hour (630-730pm) before the bedtime routine begins, I clean the kitchen, tidy up the living room and dining room, I also tidy up the girl's rooms, and clean the bathrooms.

The next morning:

Bedrooms

As soon as I get out of bed, I make it (if not immediately, then shortly after unless I am washing sheets that morning. I pick up the clothes on the floor and throw them in the hamper, and straighten the desk. I will vacuum the floor if needed as well.

Bathrooms

After washing my face, I straighten the bathroom, which includes wiping down the counters and sink, cleaning the mirror, cleaning the toilet, and sweeping the floor.

Laundry

As I am walking through the house, I pick up any stray clothes and start a load of laundry. I try to do one load a day to keep the laundry under control throughout the week.

Kitchen

While I am making breakfast for my crew, I put the dishes away that in the drainer from the night before and after breakfast I will clean the kitchen. I'll start the crock pot if needed for supper and I will sweep and mop the floor.

Living room

I usually have to tidy this room after the oldest goes to school. I pick any stray toys and vacuum the floor and I straighten the couh and chair.

Blogging.

I try to schedule blog posts the night before (sometimes I preschedule a week's worth on the weekends) so I don't have to do that first thing in the morning. Other days I am not so well prepared, so I write a post and put it up on the blog.

So, that's my morning cleaning routine. Do you have a morning/daily cleaning routine that works for you? I would love to hear about it in the comments.

Blogtober 2018- Day #12- The Age of Aquarius

Welcome to Day #12 of Blogtober! Today I thought I would talk about my zodiac sign. And a way we go..................

Let's talk about zodiac signs, shall we? I know that I am an Aquarius and that the symbol is water bearer. But....that's all that I know. So, I decided to search the interwebs for some information and to see if I fit with the sign. Well, here is what my research unearthed......

My ruling planet is Uranus
My element is Air
My life's pursuit is to understand life's mysteries
My vibration is high frequency (what does that mean?)
My secret desire is to be unique an original

Let's see..... yes, I want to understand life's mysteries and I strive to be unique and original. Here is more of a description of my sign:

My sign is regarded as the zodiac's leader. Apparently I not only march to the beat of a different drummer, but I make new music as I go along. I am supposed to be objective in judgement ( I don't know that I am), I never let their emotions get in the way  (This I don't agree with because I am extemely emotional).

Outgoing and amiable, Aquarians attract friends wherever they go and those whom Aquarians befriend have their unswerving loyalty. This is so true, because once we become friends, we are always friends, no matter what happens.

So, I tend to agree with that description. So, what is your zodiac sign and how well does it fit you?

Blogtober 2018- Day #6- My Favorite Book

For today's Blogtober post I thought it would be fun to talk on my of favorite books. Enjoy!

Fried green tomatoes is one of my favorite books! I think I have read probably more than a dozen times.  I love the plot and I really love the characters that Fannie Flagg has created.

Plot:

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a 1987 novel by Fannie Flagg. It weaves together the past and the present through the blossoming friendship between Evelyn Couch, a middle-aged housewife, and Ninny Threadgoode, an elderly woman who lives in a nursing home. Every week Evelyn visits Ninny, who tells her stories about her youth in Whistle Stop, Alabama where her sister-in-law, Idgie, and her friend, Ruth, ran a café. These stories, along with Ninny's friendship, enable Evelyn to begin a new, satisfying life while allowing the people and stories of Ninny's youth to live on.

What is your favorite book?

Blogtober 2018- Day#4- My Skincare Routine

Okay, so this post is about my skin care routine. The only thing is that I really don't follow a routine. Yes, I wash my face, I use toner, and sometime a moisturizer.... but that's about it.

I have oily skin, always have. I have tried several different types of cleansers, masks, toners, and moisturizers. Some have been expensive while others have been on the cheap side. Through the years, I have found that my skin responds better to the cheaper skin care products.

As of right now, my skin care routine revolves around two of the cheaper products and one moderately expensive of product. So, I am going to share with you a breakdown of skin care routine.

1. Cleanser

I use Cetaphil. It's very light and makes my face feel clean. I use this once in the morning and once in the evening.

2. Toner. After cleansing my face I use witch hazel as a toner.  I use this because it's very gentle on my skin and it makes it feel and look amazing.

 3. Moisturize. I use a moisterizer made by Cetaphil. Again, this is very gentle on my skin and doesn't cause break outs like most other moisturizers that I have used in the past.

What is your skin care routine? Please share in the comments below!

Blogtober 2018 Day 1- October Goals

It has been awhile since I have done a goals post and this post is long overdue. I have completely let the chaos that is my life take over. My husband and I have been sick for the last 2 weeks and  I haven't touched my planner in a couple of weeks, which explains the chaotic life. Whoops!!!

But now that I have our Fall and back to school routines established, I am excited about setting some goals and I am really going to push myself this month. There are a lot of things that I would like to accomplish so hopefully by the end of the month I will feel good about things. Here we go!!!

Personal Goals

  • drink more water
  • meditate for 5 minutes before bed. Stretch for a few minutes when getting up.
  • get better quality sleep by going to bed earlier
  • workout consistently

Family Goals

  • Adapt to our fall schedule. Update the morning, afternoon, and evening routines for the fall.
  • Celebrate Halloween.
  • Cross off items from our Fall Bucket List
Blog Goals

  • Post once per day during the month of October.
  • Make a new list of blog post ideas
  • Schedule posts until the end of October
